    Ferris Bueller's Diem of Carpe

Ferris Bueller didn't just roam around Chicago with his friends, he lived in the moment. This topic could discuss the cultural significance of the movie, parallels to actual city life. What life lessons could be learned from this movie?

    • I think this is a great idea, though I'm not totally sure what you mean by "actual city life." – sheishistoric 7 years ago

    • I think this is a great topic, one that parallels with the idea of avoiding the typical 9-5 life. Bueller dreaded the idea of working a regular job and living a regular life. He avoided school and lived life in the moment. We are seeing an increase of people trying to live lifestyles similar to this. I have always applauded his attitude and desire to pursue such a life. – anton 7 years ago

    • You can consider an educational point of view such as how people need a balance of classroom learning as well as fieldwork. Perhaps refer to the museum scene which shows that the trio wasn't entirely goofing off. – JennyCardinal 7 years ago

The Evolution of Super Bowl Commercials

The Super Bowl has been around for nearly 50 years. In recent years, it's also become a fantastic opportunity for business advertising, as many Super Bowl watchers will be able to view their commercials. Some people even look more forward to the Super Bowl commercial than the games. Over the years, commericals ranging from monkeys wearing office attire in a CareerBuilder commercial in 2006 to a hybrid "Puppy Monkey Baby" promoting Mountain Dew products this year, and more going farther back than the beginning of the new millenium. This might raise a few questions for marketers and those interested in promoting their products. What constitutes a successful Super Bowl commercial? And how has this changed over the years? And why are there monkeys featured in several of them?

    • Please do note that Artifice Writer Ryan Errington published "Super Bowl Commercials and Sponsorship" so the writer for this article can refer to this article as a point of reference or starting point and then expand it while addressing some of the questions introduced by James. – Venus Echos 9 years ago

    • It might be of interest to discuss what makes a successful commercial from the audience's point of view, too. The author of this piece might talk about how/why people look forward to the Super Bowl just because of the commercials. What kind of commercials do they want to see? – Nicole Williams 9 years ago

A Non-Educational View of To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird is a widely known book in the United States, that also talks about several issues in our society. It has become a staple in American literature, often found on high school book reading lists. Most students only know about this book because they had read or discussed it in class. The perspectives of teachers, thus, are what students are exposed to as teachers guide students in reading this book. It would be interesting to read an article that talks about this book without any influence from the culture of school, and the differences this might have in what someone learns after reading this book for leisure.

    • Great topic, although it might be hard to find sources that talk about the book without an educational context. I'd certainly be interested to hear the differences in reading for class vs. reading for leisure. Actually, you could do this with any book teachers tend to assign (The Great Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter, etc.) – Stephanie M. 8 years ago

What would have happened if Tom Holland wasn't picked to play Spider Man?

There were lots of extremely good choices for the next Spider Man character. It was highly projected at one time that Asa Butterfield would land the role, but by June, Butterfield was out. There were several other choices as well, and Marvel and Sony both spent an entire year searching. Holland has characteristics that overqualify him, such as his ability to dance and do his own stunts, especially flips. But what were to happen if someone else was chosen? How would they rank against Tom, and each other? If Tom wasn't a good choice, who should they have chosen? Spider Man, according to Marvel.com, is "the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide," after all. Did they pass off the role to the right person?

    • It would be a little odd and wrong to judge actors against Holland without the film actually being released yet. Perhaps instead of comparing to Holland you could inclue him in the discussion into what would make him a good Spider-Man as well as the "what ifs". Other than holland and Butterfield I didn't really know which actors were up for consideration so maybe as well as discussing the actors you could talk about the different people who have taken on the persona of Spider-Man: obviously Peter Parker and Myles Morales but maybe also an older Parker or a new character altogether. – Jamie White 9 years ago

    • It's a marvel film, I don't think it really matters. They could used a chimpanzee, call him Banana Parker and fans will still love it – Lazarinth 9 years ago

    Climate Change, and... Video Games?

Video games are an advancing form of media that can bring certain topics to light, like the radio and TV are used to promote through advertising. As climate change is becoming a worldwide issue, some developers have used environment issues as a subject matter for games. Climate Game Jams (48-hour game-building marathons focused on climate change) have also been promoted by the White House to increase awareness of environmental change. Are video games an effective tool for discussing climate change? The writer perhaps might discuss some of the games that have been built around environmental awareness.

    • Video games are absolutely effective tools for discussing any social change, environmental being an example. Games are designed for users to solve challenges through a myriad of different ways. Why not address solving a global crisis by...solving a global crisis? – loridonnellynj 9 years ago

    • Not just environmental awareness in it's natural state (global warming) but a lot of dystopic games bring light to the human effects on the environment through our most destructive practices. Just look at the Fallout games! Not only is the environment molded by nuclear bombs from the past they also make players live through it's lasting affects by having to constantly deal with radiation as a hazard to their character's health. It's taught us "first hand" the life pursuing nuclear weapons will bring and warn us against it, showing us the importance of taking care of the environment in a game where you literally can't eat anything without accumulating radiation poisoning. – Slaidey 9 years ago

    • Video games can indeed be an effective tool to communicate the problem of climate change. In fact, I participated in that game jam in which my team came up with a simulator that involved resource management and caring for the land that you harvest from. However, the biggest challenge for us was choosing a particular aspect of climate change and adding playable game elements to make the game fun and understanding. All in all, you can come up with a million good ideas for a game that deals with climate change, but only a handful of them can get made if you can get down to the difficult, technical detail to make the game actually playable so that its message is effectively communicated to the players without being in-your-face about it. – LeighCSquared 9 years ago

JaredT, thank for reading! Unfortunately, Undertale’s original development platform doesn’t allow for it to be available on gaming systems like PSone or XBox. At least, not yet. For a PC game though, the controls are much more simple than in other games; you only use Z, X, C, and arrow keys!

It’s really true what you say though- a good children’s book is so appealing to everyone, because deep down, we really are all children. Those books just happen to touch that part of ourselves once again. Beautiful article!

These kinds of games are difficult in multiplayer, for sure. But that’s the beauty of expanding these games to single player: it’s a whole new audience you can design for. It’d be cool to play through this game’s single player in it’s entirety, it sounds so interesting, almost like a complete second game. Thanks for reading!
