Generational Trauma in the Back to the Future Series

In the Back to the Future series, Marty McFly travels through time and confronts members of his family from the past and the future. Explore how Marty addresses his family's generational trauma and how he creates a better outcome in the present. You can also tinker with the various ways in which he faces the legacy of his ancestors and how finds a way to create a better future for specific family members. For example, his dad became confident and a science fiction writer. Another interesting point to unpack can be to address how Doc serves as a mentor, role-model, and catalyst for Marty’s time-traveling adventures while ensuring his families success.

    • This is a good idea, but a better way of looking at it is how Marty himself changes as a character after his experiences. Focus on how he reacts to seeing his father and his son, as well as what he learns about his own future and how he changes accordingly. As for Doc Brown, we see very little of their actual relationship, so a writer would be hard-pressed to find anything to analyze. – noahspud 2 years ago

    • Even better: Examine how Marty deals with his own trauma in relation to generational trauma. More specifically, Marty struggles through three films with the idea that he's a "chicken" (and reacts badly if someone calls him such). This seems like a character trait all his own, but it takes on new depth when you consider who George McFly is and how he lets Tannen Sr. walk all over him. It gets even worse in the sequel, wherein Lorraine McFly actually ends up married to Biff and George dies. You can decide for yourself what this and Marty's actions and reactions say about generational trauma, but in my opinion, it's a lovely morsel worth pursuing. – Stephanie M. 1 year ago

Journalism and the Politics of Character Assassination.

Analyze how writing techniques are used by journalist on all aspects of the political spectrum to paint politicians in a specific light. Some journalist might play with elements of the truth or take phrasing out of context to go after an opponents reputation. An example of this from the United States of America might be how journalist on the right side of the spectrum go after progressive senators like Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. They tend to portray them as communist, but they are actually self-proclaimed democratic socialists. The left in the United States of America also does similar things to the right. The article can also go into the the dangers of avoiding neutrality in political journalism and letting readers come to their own conclusion about political figures. Or, it can dive into the risks of creating a veiled portrayal of neutrality regarding political figures when the writing is not. The writer can also discuss the effects of polarization when it comes to political writing. This topic could be a delicate subject to write about since, for readers in the U.S, it is very close to elections. Nonetheless, it could be a good opportunity for an analysis of journalistic writing.

    • This article would have to be cautious to stick to analysing the writing techniques, and not focus too heavily on the politics (as that is not what The Artifice is for). – Samantha Leersen 4 years ago

    • I agree. I just wanted to put the topic out there for anyone that can skillfully pull it off, and stick to the writing techniques. I've always felt that political journalistic writing is an interesting niche because it functions to sway discourse in a certain way. I'm not familiar with the writing style enough though to do the analysis. – Passerby 4 years ago

    • The article just needs to focus on media bias and use examples from both sides. A certain amount of centrism is required but the person who writes this topic should also consider the limitations of the media. Drawing upon the failure of Hillary Clinton to successfully mobilize voters, reveals that negative media coverage can have the opposite of the intended goal. So this topic would have to critique media and its limitations. Does the media coverage even make a difference? Journalists themselves were shocked and dismayed post the 2016 election and there is ample self-reflection among them as to why all their polls were wrong. But were polls incorrect? Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million votes. So regardless of media coverage, voting will be served by the electoral college. There are many limits to how much influence the media has as has been evidenced by American politics. – Munjeera 4 years ago

    • I don't think it would be necessary to stay neutral or in the center with this article. If you think one side does this more than another, I think it's fair to build it that way. I wouldn't search for an example on the other side for everything you say about one side's behavior. – AveryGrant 4 years ago

    • I reckon the author should be encouraged to find at least one example of the other side employing character assassination. The author can have their beliefs that one side has a greater tendency for it than another, but neutrality is important when focusing on the writing techniques that journalists use. Otherwise, it would be a political debate that seeks to support the ideology of one side over another. – CharlieSimmons 4 years ago

    Legacy and One Piece

Even though the manga has been around since 1997, One Piece is still active. Eiichiro Oda, the writer, has hinted possible endings in the past. However, he seems to continually extend the timeline of the story. Other popular manga that originated around the same time have long since ended; for example, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, and Bleach. But, that is not the case for One Piece. The writer can discuss whether or not the decision to keep this manga going has damaged the storyline. Some speculate that the writer has the ending written already and he is simply filling in the gaps. Does the manga's continued popularity show that it has become living Oda's legacy?

      The Most Influential Shonen Anime

I always looked at Dragonball Z as my "gateway drug" into anime. I kind of snowballed into watching Naruto, Bleach, Fairytale, and One Piece shortly after. These are the shows that were particularly influential to me, but I'm wondering if there are other shonen anime that were influential to a wider audience. I know Quinten Tarantino is a fan of anime and he incorporates some similar styles of anime into his fills. I'm thinking of Kill Bill where the film dives into the backstory of O-Ren Ishii.

      • It would be cool to look at how early anime inspired modern movie genres, like Akira and Ghost in the Shell inspired a lot of sci-fi and action. But what makes something "influential"? Being popular in western culture? Lots of anime has been influential in other cultures/countries that didn't necessarily make as much of an impact here. This would be a great read. – Eden 6 years ago

The Emphasis of Violence in Anime

Analyze what the effect of gore and violence cause in anime, and how it improves or degrades plot. Is gore and violence merely a visual appeal or is there more meaning to it. An example from a film is Quinten Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs." He mentions in an interview that he wanted to emphasize the violence in his film so that it's realistic and in your face, so that it has the effect of being spontaneous. Anime that could be considered for this topic could be Parasyte, Deadman Wonderland, or Attack on Titan.

      • I like this topic, and would like to add few more animes to the case studies. Definitely take a look at Devil Man by Go Nagai. Nagai's work has been tremendously influential, especially when it comes to sex and violence in manga and anime. It would be an example worth studying. – idleric 8 years ago

      • Effect of violence is a two sided coin....while it can enhance the viewing by providing exhilarating action sequences,it can also distract the viewer by offsetting them or affecting the tone . violence done right should be a plot point rather than simply being a sort of fan service . – Akash 8 years ago

      • An example of violence done right is Hellsing Ultimate in my opinion. In a world full of sexual violence, warmongering, deceit, corruption, bigotry and sacrifice, the excessive gore and blood does not distract viewers but rather serves as a visual representation of the cruelty of the world. – AUSOtaku 7 years ago

      Rhetoric and Comedy

Analyze how comedy is a legitimate form of rhetoric, as rhetoric is language that is intended to influence people. People that have been seen as successful rhetoricians are people like Martin Luther King jr., Plato, and Obama. These people have been popular in the field of politics, but how does comedy come off as legitimate way to influence emotion and character. Maybe try using TV shows such as The Office or Parks and Recreation.

      • This is an excellent idea but it is slightly broad. Consider distilling this topic by looking at a specific work or text. The author has suggested 'The Office' or 'Parks and Recreation.' That said, however, the author has also preceded that by referring to individuals with political perspectives and agendas. The writer of this prompt should consider looking at comedic works that either have or aim to have any kind of political influence. Many satirical works would be worth examining. – IsidoreIsou 8 years ago

Definitely well thought out ideas and it analyzes the question of what is more important: privacy or security. I think we could all agree that we as citizens still need our human right to privacy.
