Most Influential Musicians and Bands

A subjective topic, how and why have certain musicians and bands influenced others in various areas

  • This would be a really really wide topic! For anyone interested, maybe focus it on a specific genre like rock, jazz, soul, pop... – Rachel Elfassy Bitoun 10 years ago

  • Would love to see this materialize and agree with Rachel, you could steer this in literally any direction. Inconspicuous choices would fare best, methinks. – Luke Stephenson 10 years ago

  • I would agree with Rachel Elfassy Bitoun. I have a hard enough time defining the genre of music that I specialize in (contemporary new music). Narrow it down to a specific genre, and go from there. – simonmacleod6 9 years ago

    Noise Levels in Public Libraries

Discussing how the changing standard for noise levels have changed and how it reflects what the public wants can be a great article.

There's certainly been a sea-change over the last twenty years in the way public libraries operate. The still culturally resonant idea of librarians shushing people for making too much noise is now confined to the imagination.

Indeed, the librarians at my nearby public library seem to make a point of conducting their own conversations as loudly as possible so that the world understands libraries have changed.

There are book discussion groups, and children's groups (with sing-alongs) and there are people clacking away at computers and often being assisted by very vocal staff.

It's sometimes startlingly noisy in there. You could get more work done in a football stadium.

I'm a curmudgeon, so I don't much like it. In my mind, a library remains leathery, austere and dense with pipe-smoke. People gaze at you suspiciously over pince-nez if your chair creaks.

But I understand and accept the alteration. The nature of the services libraries provide has had to alter to reflect both the technology and the people they serve. They've evolved into sort of "community hubs" as a way to remain relevant. If they hadn't, there'd have been many more closures, which would be a worse situation than having to listen to a bunch of three year olds singing "The Wheels on the Bus" while you choose your books and go elsewhere.

    • Well I feel as a library worker I should say I would be good at this topic! (although I will need to wait until I have a bit more time) I personally love seeing the events in libraries, I am responsible for running serveral of them! To fit into the arts section there wold have to be some analysis as to why it is going this way: The main reason I think is because libraries used to be in place as an are for acedemic study and learning. Nowadays, school and uni libraies serve that purpose but public libraries are about enteratinment more than academia... – Francesca Turauskis 10 years ago

    • Out of the scope of The Artifice. But if one has to be creative, maybe approaching the subject from a different angle... Like, the evolution of relationships between societies and books. Certainly, the idea of a library as a place to go, sit and read (just read) is very constricting. Also, there are different types of libraries and different uses of libraries around the world. Let's not forget that most libraries are funded and funding needs to be justified in economies with more and more pressure from people who think culture and knowledge are not primary needs... – T. Can Graffiti Be Classed As Art?

Is Graffiti an example of artistic expression or simply vandalising public spaces?

    • Great debatable topic. Graffiti is artistic and holds culture along with oppression. Graffiti sends alerts throughout the community in as much as it sends visual beauty. By this I mean a “tag” can alert the community to a particular status that is happening in the neighborhood. Then there are visual graffiti artists that tell a story in a pleasing manner that still affects the community. It is the internet for various urban communities. In regards to vandalism yes there are criminal statutes in each city that label these markings as a criminal offense. Therefore, many talented graffiti artist remain anonymous. Then there are those who ‘tag’ and it can be a real eyesore to the community and then this becomes subjective to the person viewing it as all art does. We also have galleries that feature graffiti artists and it could be examined if the controlled environment of a gallery is able to display the same intensity of a freelance artist that uses buildings, buses, trains, etc. to display their works of art. This topic offers so many elements to explore and many pros and cons and many points of view. Thanks for this suggestion. – Venus Echos 10 years ago

    • Ditto everything Venus said, but also: Banksy, a pseudonymous English graffiti artist who is one of the best-well-known artists of this genre. Crazy talented. Can't do an article on this topic w/o mentioning him. – Monique 10 years ago

    Technology in Music

Music was recorded on LP's, 45's, 8-tracks, cassette tapes, CD's, MP3, and now streaming. What is the next technological device for recorded music?

    • It might also be worth discussing the recent throwback in terms of how music is taken in. Vinyl is now so popular that a vinyl chart has been started, so is there a reason why certain ways of listening have been revitalised? – Hannah Spencer 10 years ago

Modern Art for the Common Person

Is art dead? Has art become an expression of personal narcissism? Or does it still feed the human soul? What delineates good art and bad art in Modern Art? Who decides? An exploration and examples of Modern Art and Artists and which, if any, have any value would be interesting and informative.

    • I appreciate your topic about modern art. However, the tone of these leading questions seems to be negative. Perhaps another approach would be how are people being exposed to modern art through media or actually going to galleries and museums? Most art forms, including modern art, as you know, are subjective and people develop their own individual perception as to which artists speak to their soul. – Venus Echos 10 years ago

    Why are Immoral Celbrities Tolerated?

Why are certain musicians or film/television stars tolerated for immoral behavior when if these actions were committed by a non-famous person, they could be disrespected and punished.

    • Some celebrities are doing immoral things just to get word of mouth going. If Miley Cyrus does something inappropriate, she will be all over the entertainment news. With that said, this can back fire, and celebrity will be hate for his or her actions, as they should be. Look at Mel Gibson; he is a huge asshole, and no one want to work with him because he tarnished his image. – Aaron Hatch 10 years ago

The Music Industries' Use of Youtube and Similar Websites

Is it more important for a musician and/or band to release new content on Youtube, etc, now that it has relevant against conventional means, i.e. MTV channels.

    • I would suggest a more specific headline that takes into account the distinction between content platforms (YouTube, SoundCloud, BandCamp) and social media posts that can include audio/video (Facebook, Twitter). – JayRicciardi 10 years ago
